A 2 Dollar Miracle - Carlos Peredes

Dr. Carlos Franco-Paredes is an infectious diseases specialist who recently returned to Emory University to foster the development of clinical curriculum in travel and tropical medicine.  He plans on contributing to global health research within the Infectious Diseases Division at Emory University and through his work in the division of infectious diseases at the Hospital Infantil de Mexico, Federico Gomez, Mexico City.  His research focus is the epidemiology and social determinants of neglected tropical diseases and vaccine-preventable diseases. Dr. Franco wrote a heartbreaking, touching and inspiring short story after experiencing neglected tropical diseases firsthand in Southern Sudan.

 “It is not easy to articulate reality when dealing with the misery and suffering among the most forgotten human beings in the world -- individuals that have been neglected by the world and by their political leaders..."

Reports from the Field: Burundi
SCI team delivers medication

On May 26, 2008 hostilities between Burundi's government and its last remaining rebel group came to an end through the agreement of a 'cease-fire' peace treaty. Conflicts between the FNL, an extreme Hutu rebel group, and the National Army of Burundi afflicted the country for over five weeks. Remarkably, the NTD program operations were able to continue providing services throughout the conflict.

Ibrahim Jabr

Ibrahim Jabr is the president of the International Trachoma Initiative (ITI), an organization dedicated to the elimination of blinding trachoma, the world's leading cause of preventable blindness.  Through Mr. Jabr's leadership, ITI is exploring new strategies to scale up trachoma control activities through strengthening and creating new partnerships.
