Loose Change Campaigns: Pennsylvania High School Student Raises $1,300
It is rare to come across high school students who have heard of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). However, thanks to Alex Huddell, a senior at Unionville High School in West Chester, Pennsylvania, students not only know what NTDs are, but also raised roughly $1,300 for the Global Network.

Global Network Partners in the field use a strategy called “Community Directed Treatment” in order to successfully distribute drugs to those who suffer from NTDs. The Community-Directed Treatment (CDT) empowers local communities to fight NTDs in their own villages, relieving suffering and slowing transmission.

In the article entitled, Poverty and Neglected Disease in “The Other America,” Executive Director of the Global Network, Dr. Peter Hotez, says that there is evidence that the parasitic diseases toxocariasis, cysticercosis, and toxoplasmosis as well as other neglected tropical infections, are very common in the United States - especially among poor and underrepresented minority populations living in inner cities and poor rural areas.
